Swansea Valley heritage trail
The Swansea Valley was until the last century booming with a wide variety of industry and mining. Villages, canals and road were created following the industrial boom. Nowadays, all the industries has gone but its legacy is still present throughout the valley and this project aims to inform the public on some key areas.
Groundwork has been involved with Ystalyfera & Godre’r Graig Communities First, and members of Ystalyfera Heritage Society to design 2 interpretation panels. The panels will be placed at Ystalyfera’s aqueduct and the other one at the site of the Tareni coilery in Godre’r Graig. These 2 sites were specifically chosen for their importance.
The aqueduct is one of the most important surviving feature of the canal and is a listed feature.
The Tareni site in Godre’r Graig is where you will find the 2nd panel. The site was chosen due to fact that this coilery was one of the most successful one but also due to the terrible accident and loss of life that occured just over 100 years ago on the 01/11/1909.
